Our History

The first restaurant located within ECCC opened its doors in 1989 on the corner of 6th and L Streets in Northwest Washington, DC, a prime location in the Chinatown neighborhood and one of the original community centers in the DC area. ECCC and the restaurant have hosted a plethora of dignitaries and renowned personalities since inception.

Our Name

The “91” in 91 Restaurant and Bar signifies the most important year in Eritrean history, 1991. On May 24, 1991, Eritrea won its independence from Ethiopia after waging one of the longest national wars for liberation in modern African history. The story of Eritrea leading up to May 24 is one of reverence, inspiration, and exception — a 30-year brutal struggle, taking the lives of 65,000, finally coming to an end
